Summer Learning Journey Day 4: More than meets the eye

Activity 1: Scaling New Heights
On your blog, post five questions that you would like to ask Sir Edmund Hillary about his life.
1. Was there any moment while you were climbing when you thought 'Oh no this is the end?'

2. How many went with you up the mountain?

3. Did you need to sacrifice anything to make sure you got to the top of the mountain?

4. Did you have kids or a wife and were they praying for you to come back everynight?

5. What emotions did you feel when you got up to the top of Mount Everest?

Writing these questions I now really want to talk to him... I know he is dead

Activity 2:Pancakes and Maple syrup?
By the sound of the title I love it!!!
For this activity you are asked to choose one of your favourite foods. On your blog, write the name of your favourite food and then tell us how to make it. You may need to ask a family member, friend or Google (!) for help, if you do not normally make this food for yourself.

Chocolate Mousse

Chocolate Mousse:
Ingredients
  • 225g/8oz dark chocolate
  • 5 medium free-range eggs
  • 100g/3½oz caster sugar
  • 170g/6oz unsalted butter
Directions:
  1. Place a bowl over a pan of simmering water (the water shouldn't touch the bottom of the bowl) and gently melt the chocolate in the bowl. Remove from the heat once melted and let it cool slightly.
  2. Separate the egg yolks from the egg whites. Beat the egg yolks and most of the sugar together until creamy and pale in colour (keep two teaspoons of sugar to one side for the egg whites).
  3. When it has cooled slightly, whisk the chocolate into the egg yolk and sugar mixture.
  4. Melt the butter in a pan over a low heat.
  5. Whisk the melted butter into the chocolate mixture. If it gets too thick, add a couple of tablespoons of water.
  6. In a clean bowl, whisk the egg whites and the remaining two teaspoons of sugar with an electric whisk until they're light and fluffy and hold a soft peak. Do not over-beat. The sugar will give them a gentle sheen.
  7. Carefully fold the egg whites into the chocolate mixture using a metal spoon.
  8. Spoon the chocolate mixture into small teacups or ramekins and refrigerate for about two hours.
  9. Just before serving, top each marquise with a dollop of crème fraîche and two fresh cherries, then sprinkle with cocoa powder.

Activity 3: Salt and Pepper
On your blog tell us where you would build your hotel and what you would use to build it. For an extra five points, use Google Drawings to design one room in your hotel. You can also use a paper and pencil to draw your room, take a picture of the drawing, and post it on your blog.

I know this sounds weird but I would love to build a hotel in Antarctica because you see beautiful scenery and amazing wildlife.

Good luck guys today was really fun!!

  1. Hi Bella my name is Jess and I am from Kumara school by Greymouth. Your chocolate moose looks yum! Is that a photo of one you have made? The sad thing is I would not be allowed that because I'm dairy free It's annoying! I thing A hotel in Antarctica would be cool as well. Would it be made of ice or not and how did you make the picture of your hotel? I am doing the summer learning journey as well if you want to have a look copy this:

  2. Kia Ora Jess,
Thanks a lot for checking out my blog. No I did not make that it is a photo off the internet (don't worry it is free to use.) Being dairy free must suck. Are there any perks on being dairy free? I made the hotel on a google drawing and then I took a screenshot.
    Thanks again
    Bella

  3. Hi Bella,
My name is Charlee and I go to Christ the King school. I am Participating in the Summer Learning Journey. If you were asking Sir Edmund Hillary questions you would be amazing. But would you climb Mount Everest? I definitely would not because it's such a massive risk.
    Keep the great work flowing

  4. Hi Charlee,
Thanks for visiting my blog. Please continue to give me feedback as it helps me with blogging. I would never want to climb the mountain because it would be so scary and yes a huge risk.
    Have a nice day

  5. Hello Bella,

I'm very excited to see you have had some visitors from around the country look at your blog. Isn't it incredible that this programme allows so many people to connect across the country. I think day 4's activities have been my favourite so far! I especially like reading about everyone's favourite food. Your chocolate mousse sounds scrumptious! Is this a dessert you make at Christmas?

I love your hotel room drawing! I don't think a hotel in Antarctica is weird at all, I would absolutely love to go to Antarctica. You would have to make sure the windows are double glazed and every room has good heaters otherwise it could get pretty cold... I think it's cool that you included a kids room in the hotel. What kind of toys would you have in there for the tamariki to play with?

Keep up the great work Bella!
    Talk to you later, Georgia.
