Summer Learning Journey Day 3 Week 2

Activity 1: On your blog, tell us whether you are a night owl or an early riser. Then, tell us about the rest of your family. Are they the same as you? .

Bella- I am a night owl because the time that I do most important things is at night.
Jackson- Jackson is also a night owl cause he also saves everything to night. And stays up till about 5 in the morning
Sam- Samuel is an early bird because he does do everything in the morning.
Mum- Mum is an early bird because she always gets up so early to do everything last minute
Dad- Dad actually told me he is a night owl because he does everything for work at home at like 11pm.

Activity 2: On your blog, share a list of the ingredients that you need to make this food. You must type out the list of ingredients yourself (and not simply copy and paste it from a website) to earn full points.

Chocolate mousse

225g of dark chocolate
5 medium free ranged eggs
100g caster sugar
170g unsalted butter

Activity 3 (EDIT)

Let’s imagine that the average adult can lift 25 kg and the average child can lift 15 kg. How many adults and children will it take to move the giant squid into its new room at Te Papa? [Note: There is more than one right answer to this question.]
The squid ways 500kg

So what I want to do first is divide half of 500kg which is 250kg. Then do 250kg divided by 25 because that is how many kilograms an adult can lift. 250kg divided 25 is 10. SO 10 adults can lift 250kg. Now I want to do 250 divided by 15 because that is how many kilograms a child can lift. That is 16.6666666667. All together is = 500kg.

Pheww that was hard... I had a little help from the calculator!!

Summer Learning Journey Week 2 Day 2.

Activity 1: Weaving a tall tale

On your blog, tell us whether or not you would like to try flax weaving. Does it interest you? Why or why not?
I would really love to try flax weaving because it is apart of our culture and something we should embrace. Also it does interest me because you could create so many great things using the tool of weaving.

Activity 2: Might Mangroves

On your blog, tell us about this person. Who are they? Why are they, in your opinion, so strong and tough?

Name: Dwayne Johnson
Age: 46

Dwayne Johnson is strong and tough because he is used to film a lot of stunts in so many moves so you need to be properly built to do that.

Activity 3: On your blog, list three similarities and three differences between the two plants that you chose. To earn five extra bonus points, post a picture of both plants on your blog..

Pitcher Plant
1. It is a carnivores plant
2. Completely different shape

Rafflesia Arnoldii

1. HUGE
2. It looks like a proper flower

Same:
They both have red
BOTH SMELL GROSS

I loved today with the strong person one. Merry Christmas guys!!

Summer Learning Journey WEEK 2 DAY 1

Activity 1: On your blog, post a picture of yourself doing one of your favourite summer activities. Below the picture tell us what the activity is and tell us why it is one of your favourites.

My favourite activity to do in the summer is to go swimming at our Water Hole in Watea. It's an awesome place to cool off and really relaxing for the adults. We also have a rock that we jump off that actually looks like a crocodile.

( Hi I am in Auckland right now but will be back after boxing day and will also add the photo)

Activity 2: On your blog, list the three people you would like to have on your Lake Taupo Cycle Race Support Crew. Tell us why you have chosen each person.

1. Jack- I chose Jack because his dad lives in Taupo and should have some information about the track to make sure I don't get lost.

2. Tia- I chose Tia because she would be the one who gave me a confidence boost. She is also filled with energy and extremely funny.

3. Dad- I chose my dad because he would be my coach. He would be the one who made sure I was fit and ready. Everyday we would have a look at the coarse to see what I need to work on.

Activity 3: On your blog, write out each fact and in CAPITAL LETTERS beside the fact, write the word ‘TRUE’ if it is a true fact or ‘FALSE’ if it is not true.

Fish Fact #1: The oldest known fish in the world is a 65 year old Australian lungfish.
Actually the oldest known fish was called Granddad but then sadly passed away. Therefore the 65 year old Australian fish is the oldest fish in the world...
TRUE!!
Fish Fact #2: Sharks are the only fish that have eyelids.
Sharks have these things called a Nictitating  Membrane which works something just like a eyelid. SO I guess true
Fish Fact #3: Starfish are a type of fish.
Starfish or Sea Stars are not fish. They do not have fins, gills and scales.
FALSE!!
Fish Fact #4: Fish communicate with each other by making low-pitched sounds (moans, hisses, etc)
Some fish use croaking to communicate but mostly just use body language. Some species of fish will flare out their gill plates just like a cat would rise on its back. Soooo FALSE
Fish Fact #5: Fish usually swim together in groups called ‘classes.’
No fish travel in groups called 'schools' VERY close though.
FALSE

OK I loved today, I don't know why it was just really fun. I am very sorry I just have a few family issues going on so I am in Auckland at the moment and trying to do SLJ at the same time. Hope you have a very nice Christmas!!

Have a nice birthday to Louis Tomlinson from One Direction, Howard Hughes, John (King Of England), Stephanie Ruhle & Stephanie Myer etc.

Summer Learning Journey Day 5: Blink and you'll miss it FIRST WEEK DONE!!!

Activity 1: Towering Timbers
On your blog tell us whether you think logging should be allowed in New Zealand. Be sure to provide at least two reasons to support your argument.

I do not think logging should be allowed in New Zealand. Firstly it cuts down trees that lots of our wildlife live in. I know it makes houses but don't we have more than enough. Paper on the other hand, it is the 20th century and we all use technology now. Secondly we need trees to breathe. They create oxygen the we breathe in. So why would we be cutting down trees if it is the reason we are alive. SO DON'T CUT DOWN TREES!!!

Activity 2: Living on the edge
On your blog, write a letter to your best friend or a family member telling them about your trip to the tundra. To earn full points your letter must have a greeting (eg. Dear…) followed by 5 – 6 sentences of information about what your experience.
Dear Jackson,
Guess what on Friday I got to go to Tundra. It was so exciting but very cold. It was -15 degrees. Did you know the word Tundra comes from a Finnish word Tuntiri which means treeless land or barren land? Guess what while we were taking a walk we saw and Arctic Fox and even a reindeer. The class decided to call the Reindeer Fiona and the Arctic Fox Foxy. It was such a fun trip!! Maybe Jackson one day you and Charlotte to go visit it. If you do don't forget to invite me.
Yours Sincerely,
Bella

Activity 3: Going...going... GONE

New Zealand, beaches everywhere you look around, beautiful scenery with amazing creatures. Tourists everywhere are kayaking around amazing islands. Lots of different walks around the alive forests. Dolphin cruises with spectacular wildlife. Breathtaking views with amazing houses. Strange but cute animals. Amazing Life!!!

Summer Learning Journey Day 4: More than meets the eye

Activity 1: Scaling New Heights
On your blog, post five questions that you would like to ask Sir Edmund Hillary about his life.
1. Was there any moment while you were climbing when you thought 'Oh no this is the end?'

2. How many went with you up the mountain?

3. Did you need to sacrifice anything to make sure you got to the top of the mountain?

4. Did you have kids or a wife and were they praying for you to come back everynight?

5. What emotions did you feel when you got up to the top of Mount Everest?

Writing these questions I now really want to talk to him... I know he is dead

Activity 2:Pancakes and Maple syrup?
By the sound of the title I love it!!!
For this activity you are asked to choose one of your favourite foods. On your blog, write the name of your favourite food and then tell us how to make it. You may need to ask a family member, friend or Google (!) for help, if you do not normally make this food for yourself.

Chocolate Mousse

Chocolate Mousse:
Ingredients
  • 225g/8oz dark chocolate
  • 5 medium free-range eggs
  • 100g/3½oz caster sugar
  • 170g/6oz unsalted butter
Directions:
  1. Place a bowl over a pan of simmering water (the water shouldn't touch the bottom of the bowl) and gently melt the chocolate in the bowl. Remove from the heat once melted and let it cool slightly.
  2. Separate the egg yolks from the egg whites. Beat the egg yolks and most of the sugar together until creamy and pale in colour (keep two teaspoons of sugar to one side for the egg whites).
  3. When it has cooled slightly, whisk the chocolate into the egg yolk and sugar mixture.
  4. Melt the butter in a pan over a low heat.
  5. Whisk the melted butter into the chocolate mixture. If it gets too thick, add a couple of tablespoons of water.
  6. In a clean bowl, whisk the egg whites and the remaining two teaspoons of sugar with an electric whisk until they're light and fluffy and hold a soft peak. Do not over-beat. The sugar will give them a gentle sheen.
  7. Carefully fold the egg whites into the chocolate mixture using a metal spoon.
  8. Spoon the chocolate mixture into small teacups or ramekins and refrigerate for about two hours.
  9. Just before serving, top each marquise with a dollop of crème fraîche and two fresh cherries, then sprinkle with cocoa powder.

Activity 3: Salt and Pepper
On your blog tell us where you would build your hotel and what you would use to build it. For an extra five points, use Google Drawings to design one room in your hotel. You can also use a paper and pencil to draw your room, take a picture of the drawing, and post it on your blog.

I know this sounds weird but I would love to build a hotel in Antarctica because you see beautiful scenery and amazing wildlife.

Good luck guys today was really fun!!

Activity 2: The secretive stink
On your blog list three pros (good things) and three cons (bad things) about working as a DOC ranger. At the bottom of your post, tell us whether you would like to be a DOC Ranger or not.

PROS

  • You get to see awesome wildlife
  • Protect wildlife
  • Destroy the cats
CONS
  • If you are real attached to the animal and have to let it go it would be quite emotional.
  • You see dead/injured wildlife
  • You see the different species of wildlife numbers go down.

I would like to be a DOC ranger. I think it would be good for me and I love animals so it would be amazing.

Activity 3: The WWF: World Wildlife Fund

Once you have watched the video, go to your blog and, using full sentences, tell us:
1) The name of the animal the WWF is working to save.

The Saimaa Ringed Seal is the animal WWF is trying to save.

2) What the WWF is doing to help the animal.

WWF is trying to help the Saimaa Ringed seal by building snow banks so when they have their babies they won't get cold and can hide from predators.
3) What, if any, success they have had protecting the animal.

They have had a massive success because at first they had 360 individual seals now there are 1000. I am really glad that the number of that species are growing.

Hi Guys. It has been a great day today and I am really excited for tomorrow. GOOD LUCK!!

Summer Learning Journey DAY 2

Activity 1:On your blog, tell us whether you would like to go and visit Tāne Mahuta one day. Be sure to tell us why you do (or do not) want to visit this endemic tree.

One day I would love to go see Tane Mahuta because he has played an important role in the myths and legends that are part of our history. Tane mahuta helped to bring light to our world by separating his parents Ranginui (sky father) and Papatuanuku (earth mother). Tane mahuta is also the biggest tree in New Zealand, standing at a mighty 51.5 metres high. Unfortunately, this majestic beauty might not be around for much longer due to Kauri die back which is another reason why I want to visit the god of the forest.

Activity 2: On your blog list three sports teams that have the word ‘fern’ in their title. Beside each team’s name, post a picture of their uniform. Then, at the bottom of your blog post tell us which of the three uniforms you like best and why.

1. Silver Ferns
Image result for Silver Ferns uniform
2. Football Ferns
Image result for Football ferns uniform
3. Black Ferns
Image result for black ferns uniform

My favourite uniform out off all of them is Black Ferns because the Football Ferns uniform looks really hot and the Silver Ferns outfit looks really small and not very helpful during a game.

Activity 3: On your blog, tell us how to solve this maths problem. You can write your answer in words, use a Sketchpad image, or post a video explaining how you would figure it out. Be sure to give us your final answer in millilitres (ml).

To solve this question I need to times 365 by 3. I do this because there are 365 days in a year and everyday I need to feed the cactus 3 drops of water. The way I am going to do it is times 300 by 3 which is 900. Then do 3 times 60 which is 180 and then 3 times 5 which is 15. Now add it all together. 900+180+15 is 1095. So the answer is 1095 ml.

I loved today because we had a mixture of writing and maths which was really cool. HAVE A NICE DAY

Summer Learning Journey W1D1

Activity 1: The legend of New Zealand

1. Tribal Waka

The seven waka that came to New Zealand were called Tainui, Te Arawa ( My waka), Mataatua, Kurahaupo, Tokomaru, Aotea & Takitimu.

2. The Ancient Tuatara

Did you know the Tuatara is the only beak headed reptile in the world? Every species of the reptile family except for the Tuatara died around 65 million years ago!!

3. The meaning of Kia Ora

The most obvious meaning of Kia Ora is hello. But the two words have a more powerful meaning. 'Ora' meaning to be alive. 'Kia' changes Ora to a verb so instead of alive it would change to living. So when you say Kia Ora to someone you are wishing the essence of life upon them.

Activity 2: North & South

My hometown is Paihia. It is such a beautiful place with awesome wildlife. We live so close to the beach and we have amazing people. There are lots of fun things to do like parasailing, dolphin seeing & helicopter rides. I am so proud that I can call Paihia my hometown.

Bonus Activity: Ice, Ice Baby

It is awesome to get back into Summer Learning Journey!! Good luck guys!
